Snowmass’s In House Efficiency for Sewer

The town of Snowmass, outside of Denver, has history stemming back from 1910.  The population in this ski town sustains the usual fluctuation, depending on the season, there can be approximately 2,500 residents all the way up to 18,000.  During the beginning of the ski season (typically from November 15th-December 15th) the water and sewer department can expect to supply from 80 to 100 million gallons of raw water for snowmaking.  The sewer and water systems measure about the same length, about 45 miles, and date back to the 1960’s for some sections of the sewer pipeline.  The high mountain basin has 4 miles of raw water collection pipes which are made of cast iron and ductile iron.  Approximately 17 miles of cast iron were installed prior to 1972. The fact that they are placed on a steep hillside makes the pipes predisposed to leaks and erosion due to ground movement, frost and roots entering through cracks in the pipe.   The town has implemented an aggressive approach to retain proper sewer line functioning through rehabilitation. The current initiative is to replace approximately a half mile of the line each year.  Along with this effort, crews perform leak detection tests, mostly in the spring, with a smaller percentage being retested in the fall.
