Denver’s Ashland Reservoir: Functional Redesign

Denver Water has been working to enhance the safety and reliability of its Ashland Reservoir site. The city is actively in the process of building two new underground water storage tanks. The project is being phased to demolish and replace one tank at a time. The two tanks could not be demolished at the same time because the water stored at the site is needed for customers and for fire protection. In the early 1900’s, concrete floors and wood roofs were added to the reservoir. The wood roofs were replaced with precast concrete in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. Despite routine maintenance and significant repairs, the tanks experienced leaks, and some of the precast roof sections fractured. With the new construction of the tanks, the storage area at the site will be reduced from 41 million gallons to 20 million gallons. The entire project is scheduled to continue through 2017.

Irrigation tip: When it comes to watering your Denver lawn, April is too early to go automatic. It’s best to program your sprinkler system for later months, when the ground is less likely to retain wintertime moisture. But you can still dig in and start preparing for the planting season. Start from the bottom up and aerate your lawn. If you can, aerate after a rain or snow shower which provides moisture. This will help prepare the soil for the process. Then, take a top-down approach by checking the height and width of your trees, shrubs and perennials. Prune any overgrowth, which makes excellent compost when shredded.
