Colorado State University offers a Master Gardener Program for those who want to develop water wise landscaping techniques. The class will teach the student how to outline the six steps in the landscape design process and explain how the process is important to potential water savings. There will also be a focus on how a gardener theme defines the landscape around family values, needs and wants. The students will examine and analyze how hydro zones fit into the design process. This is essentially the principle of water-wise gardening; to select plants that are appropriate for the climate and group them according to their water needs. In Colorado’s climate, the concept of low-water use plants is NOT a Phoenix, Arizona style rock and cacti garden. There is a broad selection of landscape plants that tolerate reduced irrigation. Many of these plants are native to the arid west. There will also be discussion on how Colorado’s multi-year drought routinely occurs and how community expectation about the lawn care can change during a water shortage.
Interesting fact:
At the Aurora Municipal Center, the amount of water used for irrigation dropped from 13,000 gallons (over the course of a year) to 2,500 gallons, after converting a 1,000 square foot plot from turf grass to a vegetable garden.
